Plymstock lies on the eastern side of Plymouth, across the estuary of the River Plym from the city centre. On the map, its residential streets cover a raised area of land, with curving closes and cul-de-sacs typical of twentieth-century suburban growth. To the west the land drops toward the water, and to the south it opens toward the edge of Plymouth Sound.
The area's edges are shaped by water. The Plym estuary and the Cattewater form a wide channel to the west, and small creeks cut into the shoreline. Nearby, the waterside villages of Hooe and Turnchapel sit by their own inlets, and the headland of Mount Batten looks across the Sound toward the Hoe.
A Plymstock map poster combines the neat patterns of suburban streets with an irregular, tidal coastline. The water on the western and southern edges gives the composition a natural frame, and the curving roads fill the middle.

To the south and west, small inlets and creeks cut into the land near Hooe and Turnchapel. They create an intricate, fragmented shoreline on the map.
