Pokhvistnevo is in the east of Samara Oblast, close to the border with Orenburg Oblast and Tatarstan. It grew around a station on the railway between Samara and Ufa, and the tracks still divide the map. On one side lie older wooden-house streets, on the other newer blocks and industrial areas.
The Bolshoy Kinel River runs through the valley, with its floodplain and oxbows showing as loose curves at the edge of town. Oil production in the surrounding district became important in the twentieth century, and the landscape beyond the town combines farmland, gentle hills and scattered industrial sites.

The river meanders through the valley beside the town, leaving curved channels and old oxbows on the floodplain.

Long rows of low houses with gardens fill much of the town, forming a regular pattern of narrow blocks that contrasts with the newer apartment districts.
