Porirua is a city north of Wellington, on the south-west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It grew rapidly from the 1960s as a planned satellite city, with state housing suburbs built on the hills around the harbour. Today it is a diverse city with a large Māori and Pacific population and strong links to the capital.
The map is shaped by water. Porirua Harbour opens to the sea near Plimmerton and splits into two arms: one reaching into the city centre, the other forming the Pauatahanui Inlet. Suburbs climb the ridges around them, their streets following the contours in curves and loops. Mana Island lies offshore.
