Porterville sits on the eastern edge of California's San Joaquin Valley in Tulare County, right where the flat farmland begins to rise into the Sierra Nevada foothills. From above, the town is laid out on a regular grid of streets and avenues, and the Tule River runs through it from the east, cutting a gentle diagonal across the blocks.
The land around the town is given over to citrus groves and orchards, which show on a map as a patchwork of rectangular fields. To the east the pattern changes quickly as roads begin to curve with the terrain, and the reservoir of Lake Success sits in the foothills. Porterville is often described as a gateway to the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument.
