From above, the river is the dominant shape: a wide band of water along one side of the map, with the town's lanes, compounds and small tanks packed in behind it. The street pattern is irregular, with narrow paths that branch and join and none of the planned blocks of newer suburbs.
The area around Pujali has long been a mix of riverside industry and residential settlement, part of the working belt that spreads south along the Hooghly from the city. Railway and road links tie it to neighbouring Budge Budge and to Kolkata.
