Pūranpur lies in Pilibhit district in northern Uttar Pradesh, on the flat Terai plain along the foot of the Himalaya. The town grew as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding farmland. Its map shows a busy core of lanes around the bazaar and the railway, with roads leading out to villages in every direction.
Sugarcane dominates the countryside, and the fields reach right up to the edge of town. The forests of the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve lie nearby, and the Sharda River and its channels wind across the plain.
