Puthia is an upazila of Rajshahi District in north-western Bangladesh, east of the city of Rajshahi. Most of its area is farmland on the flat plain of the Ganges basin, divided into rice fields and dotted with villages. On a map it appears as a fine web of rural roads and paths, broken by many ponds and water tanks of every size.
Its best-known place is the Puthia Temple Complex, a group of Hindu temples built by the zamindars of Puthia around their palace, the Puthia Rajbari. Among them are the tall Shiva temple, the terracotta-decorated Govinda temple and the Jagannath temple, standing beside large ornamental ponds that also show clearly from above.
The Dhaka–Rajshahi highway crosses the upazila, giving the rural pattern one firm, straight line. Large rectangular ponds beside the temples and countless smaller tanks across the villages appear as crisp water shapes, giving the poster a scattered, almost dotted texture.
Highway line
The main road between Dhaka and Rajshahi runs through the upazila, a strong straight line that contrasts with the winding village paths and field boundaries on either side.
