Putian Map Poster
Putian lies on the central Fujian coast, where the Mulan River crosses the fertile Xinghua Plain on its way to the sea. On a map the city appears as a dense core surrounded by a web of irrigation channels, villages and newer road grids that fill the flat land between the hills and the shoreline.
The river's best-known structure is the Mulan Weir, an irrigation dam begun in the Song dynasty that still helps distribute water across the plain. Offshore, Meizhou Island is known across the Chinese-speaking world as the birthplace of Mazu, the sea goddess, and draws pilgrims each year to its temple complex.
