Qifţ Map Poster
Qifţ stands on the east bank of the Nile in Qena Governorate, within the narrow green strip of farmland between the river and the desert in Upper Egypt. From above, the town is a dense cluster of streets set just back from the water. Irrigated fields surround it, and the pale edge of the desert lies not far to the east.
In antiquity this was Coptos, an important town and religious centre associated with the god Min. Its importance came from its position. Coptos stood at the Nile end of the route through Wadi Hammamat to the Red Sea coast, which was used for trade and quarrying expeditions for thousands of years. Remains of its temples survive near the modern town.
A Qifţ map poster shows how directly the landscape still shapes life here. Canals and field boundaries run parallel to the river, and roads follow the valley north and south. The built-up area sits between the water and the sand. It is a small map with a very long history behind it.
