Qinhuangdao stretches along the northern shore of the Bohai Sea in Hebei province. From above it is a series of districts laid out along the coast, not one compact centre. The shoreline curves across the entire map, with ports, beaches and headlands marking the edge of the land, and the Yan mountains rise behind the city to the north.
At Shanhaiguan, in the east of the city, the Great Wall reaches the sea. The spot where it ends in the water is known as Old Dragon's Head. The walled town of Shanhaiguan guarded the route between the North China Plain and the northeast. Along the coast, Beidaihe has been a summer resort since the late nineteenth century, and Qinhuangdao's port is a major terminal for shipping coal.
A Qinhuangdao map poster shows these different places along one coastline. The square walls of Shanhaiguan, the grid of the central port district and the looser resort streets of Beidaihe are all separate patterns. The sea takes up the southern part of the sheet as a large, calm area of open space.

Piers and docks for coal and cargo shipping extend into the water in regular, geometric shapes, contrasting with the natural line of the coast.
