Qionghu Map Poster & Print
Qionghu lies in the north of Hunan province, within the low, water-laden country around Dongting Lake. Here the map is shaped as much by water as by roads: lakes, irrigation channels and river branches cut through the land, and settlements sit on the firmer ground between them. The town itself is a compact grid pressed against this network of waterways.
Much of the surrounding land has long been worked as polders and paddy fields, protected by embankments that appear on a map as long, deliberate lines. Roads often follow these dykes, which explains why so many of them run perfectly straight before turning sharply. The result is a geometric landscape, more engineered than it first appears.
A Qionghu map poster brings that interplay into focus. Water can read as solid shapes against thin street lines, or the reverse, depending on the style you choose. Either way, the composition is unusually graphic for a town of its size, with broad flat areas broken by channels and the small, dense block of the centre.

Many roads ride along raised dykes built to hold back floodwater, which is why they run in long straight lines across the plain before meeting at sharp angles.

The built-up core is a tight grid of blocks, clearly bounded by water and fields, so the town appears on the map as a well-defined island of streets.
