On the map it shows the typical pattern of the valley: a town centre with a mix of regular and irregular streets, surrounded by villages and farmland divided into long plots. Irrigation canals cut across the land in straight and curving lines.

The Ferghana Valley has been farmed for centuries using water from the surrounding mountains, and canals and ditches still structure the fields, roads and settlements.
