Ratingen sits just north of Düsseldorf, and on a map it is a place of clear contrasts. At its heart is a small medieval old town whose oval outline is still visible in the ring of streets and green space where the walls once stood, and some of the old towers survive. Around it, residential districts, business parks and the high-rise blocks of Ratingen West spread out in very different patterns.
The town has an unusual industrial past. Cromford, the textile mill Johann Gottfried Brügelmann founded here in the 1780s, is regarded as the first factory in continental Europe and takes its name from Richard Arkwright's mill in Derbyshire. The Anger stream runs past it through the town, and the Blauer See, a lake in a former quarry, adds water on the eastern side.

The late eighteenth-century textile works on the Anger, often called the first factory on the continent, stands in parkland just outside the old core.
