Reading grew up where the River Kennet flows into the Thames, and both rivers are still the main shapes on the map. The Thames swings along the northern edge and separates the centre from Caversham on the far bank. The Kennet and its canalised navigation run east to west through the heart of town, past the shopping streets and old wharves, before joining the larger river.
Around the centre, the Inner Distribution Road forms a tight loop of dual carriageway, and outside it the Victorian terraces spread in long parallel rows. Farther south the M4 cuts a straight line across the edge of the map. A Reading map poster shows these layers together: river town, railway town and modern commuter hub, each laid over the one before.
The ruins of Reading Abbey, founded by Henry I, who is buried there, stand next to Forbury Gardens and the old gaol where Oscar Wilde was held. Reading is often described as one of the largest towns in England without city status. Every August its riverside meadows host one of the country's best-known music festivals.

The area around the abbey ruins, Forbury Gardens and the old gaol forms a green pocket on the eastern side of the centre, bounded by the river and the railway.
Thames bridges
Caversham Bridge and Reading Bridge cross the Thames a short distance apart, joining the centre to the quieter residential streets on the northern bank.
