Reitz is a farming town in the eastern Free State of South Africa, founded in 1889 and named after Francis William Reitz, then president of the Orange Free State. It lies on the high, open grassland of the highveld. Its map follows the pattern of many towns from that period: a rectangular grid of streets laid out in straight, even blocks.
The town serves a wide farming district known for maize, wheat and livestock. Beyond the last streets, the map opens into large farm blocks divided by straight gravel roads. Next to the original town lies the township of Petsana, home to much of the population, whose own network of streets adds a second, denser pattern to the composition.
