Renyi lies in western Chongqing, in the hilly country of the eastern Sichuan Basin. On the map, the town forms a compact centre with a few main streets, surrounded by a landscape of low, rounded hills. Roads cannot run straight here: they wind along the valleys and around the slopes, linking the town with scattered villages and farmland across the surrounding countryside.
This part of Chongqing is known for its agricultural landscape of terraced fields and ponds that fill the valleys between the hills, together with farmhouses scattered on the higher ground. On a detailed map, these features give the countryside an intricate pattern, with small water bodies and field boundaries tracing the contours of the land.
