Retreat is one of Cape Town's southern suburbs. It sits on the flat land between the Steenberg and Tokai slopes to the west and the False Bay coast to the south. On a map the Southern Line railway passes through as a clean diagonal, and Retreat station sits on it. Blocks of housing fill the ground on either side, divided by long main roads.
The streets are a mixture. Straight, regular rows of mid-century housing lie alongside curving crescents, school fields and small parks. To the east the ground opens toward Zandvlei, the estuary and lake that drains to the sea at Muizenberg. To the west the slopes of Table Mountain National Park rise beyond Tokai. The suburb's name is usually connected to the 1795 Battle of Muizenberg. The Dutch forces withdrew north through this area after the battle.
A Retreat map poster sits at an interesting boundary. The fine grid of the suburb meets the wetland to one side and the mountain to the other. The railway ties it back to the city centre. It is an everyday piece of Cape Town, with the peninsula's landscape close enough to shape the edges of the map.

East of the suburb, the lake and estuary of Zandvlei form an irregular body of water with reedy edges. It flows toward False Bay at Muizenberg.
Mountain edge
Toward Tokai and Steenberg the streets stop at the slopes. The open ground of the national park takes over and leaves a pale, empty margin on the poster.
