Rheinberg lies on the left bank of the Lower Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Wesel district. The land here is almost entirely flat, and on a map that shows. Roads fan out across open farmland, water channels cross the fields, and the town sits as a tight cluster of streets surrounded by green, with the broad Rhine running a little to the east.
The name recalls the river, although the Rhine has shifted its course over the centuries and no longer flows right past the old town. Rheinberg is also known as the home of the Underberg company, whose small bottles of herbal bitters are sold far beyond Germany.
A Rheinberg map poster captures the neat oval of the historic centre, with its streets meeting at the market square, and the looser grid of later housing around it. Outlying villages sit like small islands in the surrounding fields. In black and white, the flat land and the long roads take on a spare, almost graphic quality.
