Rheine lies in the north of the Münsterland, and the Ems river runs through the middle of it. From above, the river is the main feature. It curves through the town from south to north, with the old centre on one bank and bridges linking the two sides. A weir in the centre creates a clear break in the river's line, and the town grew up around that crossing.
South of the centre, at Bentlage, a former monastery and the old Saline Gottesgabe salt-works stand in parkland along the Ems. The long graduation tower is visible as a thin straight line among the trees. Rheine is also a railway junction, and tracks spread in several directions, giving the map strong straight lines that contrast with the river.
A Rheine map poster brings together the curve of water and the straight lines of rail. The dense old town fits into a bend of the Ems. Green space follows the river south, and the rest of the town spreads over flat Westphalian land. It works well in Blueprint, where the waterway and tracks stand out.

Several railway lines meet at Rheine and cut long straight strokes across the town, in contrast to the winding river.
