Few cities have a map so shaped by mountains. Rio de Janeiro fills the narrow flat land between steep granite peaks, the Atlantic Ocean and the wide mouth of Guanabara Bay. Neighbourhoods are linked by tunnels and coastal roads, and on the map the streets appear in separate pockets, each one bounded by rock, forest or water.
The Tijuca Forest covers much of the massif in the middle of the city, one of the largest urban forests in the world, with Corcovado and its statue of Christ the Redeemer rising at its edge. Below, the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon sits behind the beaches of Ipanema and Leblon, while Copacabana curves in a long crescent further east.
Rio was the capital of Brazil until 1960, and the historic centre near the bay still carries that legacy in its denser, older street pattern.
