Rio Grande da Serra is the least populous and southernmost of the municipalities in São Paulo's ABC region, lying where the metropolis begins to give way to the forested slopes of the Serra do Mar. On the map the urban area is irregular and fragmented, following ridges and valleys rather than any grid, with patches of green pressing in from all sides.
Water shapes the town more than roads do. The Rio Grande arm of the Billings Reservoir reaches toward the municipality, and much of its territory falls within a protected watershed area that limits dense construction. The result is a map of winding streets, inlets and open land, quite unlike the continuous urban fabric of the cities to the north.
The town is also the end of the line: the CPTM Line 10 commuter railway terminates here, and the tracks continue past it toward the historic railway village of Paranapiacaba at the top of the escarpment.
