Rossano Stazione is the lower, modern half of Rossano in Calabria, now part of the merged municipality of Corigliano-Rossano. The historic town sits on a hill inland and is known for the purple Codex Purpureus Rossanensis and its Byzantine churches. The Stazione district grew in the twentieth century on the coastal plain, around the railway that follows the Ionian shore.
That origin gives it a very different map from the hill town above. Streets are wider and straighter, set out on level ground in a loose grid, and the railway and coastal road run parallel to the shore. Toward the sea the blocks give way to beach and open land. Inland, the plain rises toward the slopes that lead up to the old town.
