Rubí lies in the Vallès Occidental, the plain behind the Collserola hills north-west of Barcelona, between Terrassa and Sant Cugat del Vallès. The town is organised around the Riera de Rubí, a seasonal watercourse whose channel runs through the middle of the map and divides the built-up area into two sides linked by a series of bridges.
The old centre is small, with narrow streets around the parish church of Sant Pere, while later growth spread over the surrounding slopes in neighbourhoods of irregular, contour-following streets. Large industrial estates occupy the outer areas and appear on the map as big rectangular blocks crossed by wide service roads, the result of the town's twentieth-century manufacturing expansion.
Rubí once had a strong vine-growing tradition, and its population grew quickly in the 1960s and 1970s with migration from other parts of Spain.
