Saint John is the smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands, lying just east of Saint Thomas. Its outline is highly irregular: the coast folds into one bay after another, with long headlands reaching out between them. Inland the ground rises steeply, and the roads follow the ridges in tight curves rather than straight lines, giving the map a looping, hand-drawn quality.
Roughly two-thirds of the island belongs to Virgin Islands National Park, established in 1956 on land largely donated by Laurance Rockefeller. That protection shows on the map as broad areas with few roads. Cruz Bay, on the west side, is where ferries arrive from Saint Thomas, and Coral Bay sits across the island in the east.

The north shore bays line up along the top of the frame, the ridge road snakes through the middle, and the south coast breaks into its own headlands and coves. The main road crosses the island along its high ground, switching back repeatedly. Its winding line connects Cruz Bay in the west with Coral Bay in the east.
Coral Bay
A large, many-armed bay on the eastern end of the island. Its fingers of water reach deep into the land and give the eastern outline much of its complexity.
