The commune of Saint-Martin-de-Belleville covers the whole Belleville valley, which explains its size on the map. A river runs down the valley floor and a road follows it, linking a string of small hamlets to the upper basins. From above it looks like a long corridor. The land around it folds into side combes and grows steeper and emptier towards the head of the valley.
The village of Saint-Martin sits lowest. It is a small cluster of stone and timber houses around its church, with lanes that bend to follow the slope. Further up, the commune also takes in Les Menuires and Val Thorens, so a single boundary holds a quiet farming village and two purpose-built resorts. All of it belongs to the Three Valleys ski area, one of the largest linked ski domains in the world.

Saint-Martin's compact centre forms a small knot of irregular lanes around its church. It is the densest and oldest part of the map, and very different from the resorts built higher up.
Three Valleys link
The commune's upper edge meets the ridges it shares with neighbouring valleys. The lifts of the Three Valleys cross those ridges and join Belleville to Méribel and Courchevel beyond.
