Salima is the headquarters of Salima District in Malawi's Central Region, set on the lowland plain near the western shore of Lake Malawi. The town itself sits a little inland from the water, with roads leading down to the lakeshore beaches and to Senga Bay. From above, the settlement is modest and spread out, surrounded by farmland and villages.
A Salima map poster shows the town centre around its main roads, with residential areas fanning out on the flat ground. Toward the east the lake takes over the composition: a long, smooth shoreline and a wide expanse of open water that fills much of the frame and gives the map its calm, horizontal character.
Salima is a gateway from Lilongwe to the lake, and the nearby shore is popular for weekends away from the capital. The lake itself, one of the great lakes of the African Rift, is known for its hundreds of species of cichlid fish.
