San Clemente lies in Pisco Province in the Ica Region of southern Peru, on the dry coastal plain a short distance inland from the Pacific. The surrounding landscape is desert, broken by the irrigated green of the Pisco River valley, and from above the contrast between farmland and bare ground is striking.
The town grew along major roads, and its map is shaped by them. The Pan-American Highway runs through the area, and nearby a road branches inland, climbing toward the Andes. Streets extend from these routes in a modest grid, with newer neighbourhoods filling in toward the fields. The region was severely affected by the 2007 earthquake, and much has been rebuilt since.
