San Cristóbal lies at the eastern edge of the Galápagos archipelago, some 1,000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador. Its town, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on the southwestern shore, is the administrative capital of the Galápagos province, and the island has one of the archipelago's airports. Charles Darwin made his first landing in the islands on San Cristóbal in 1835.
From above, the island stretches from southwest to northeast. The southwestern half rises into an old volcanic highland, where the main road climbs from the port toward farms in the interior. The northeastern half is lower and drier, scattered with small cones and lava fields. In the highlands sits El Junco, a crater lake and one of the few permanent bodies of fresh water in the Galápagos. Offshore, the split rock known as Kicker Rock, or León Dormido, rises straight from the sea. Sea lions occupy the town beaches, which is one of the first things visitors notice when they arrive.
