San Cristóbal Verapaz is a town in the department of Alta Verapaz in the highlands of Guatemala. It lies on the shore of Laguna Chichoj, a small lake that is the town's most recognisable feature on any map. Many residents are Poqomchi' Maya. The town is one of the main centres of that language and culture, and also part of Guatemala's Catholic Verapaz tradition.
The centre follows the Spanish colonial pattern of square blocks around a central plaza and church. Its grid runs close to the lake and then gives way to looser streets on the surrounding slopes. Beyond the town the terrain is hilly and cut by winding roads. The lake's smooth outline stands against the angular blocks and the curving mountain routes.
