San Fernando is the capital of Manantay district in Peru's Ucayali region, part of the urban area that has grown around Pucallpa in the Amazonian lowlands. The map shows a grid of streets spreading across flat ground. The Ucayali River and its complex floodplain lie close by, and tropical forest and farmland fill the land beyond the edges of the city.
The Ucayali is one of the main headwaters of the Amazon. Around Pucallpa it wanders across its floodplain in great loops, leaving oxbow lakes and abandoned channels behind.
