San Luis Obispo sits in a valley on California's Central Coast, roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Downtown grew up around the mission founded in 1772. San Luis Obispo Creek still winds through the centre, sometimes in the open and sometimes tucked behind buildings. The street grid tilts slightly, following the valley rather than the compass.
Around the city rises a chain of old volcanic plugs known as the Nine Sisters, or Morros, including Bishop Peak and Cerro San Luis. On a map they appear as blank, rounded shapes pressing against the street network. To the north, the Cal Poly campus spreads over its own hills, with curving roads and playing fields that look nothing like the downtown blocks.
Every week Higuera Street hosts an evening farmers' market that has become a local institution, and the mission plaza by the creek remains the heart of town.
