Sanford lies in York County in southern Maine, inland from the coastal towns of Wells and Kennebunk. The Mousam River runs through it and powered the textile mills that built the city in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. From above, the brick mill blocks and the dense streets around them still mark the historic core.
The city includes the village of Springvale, which has its own small centre further along the river. Between the two, the map shows mill ponds, residential streets and a lot of woodland. The Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport, with its crossing runways, is a clear geometric feature on the southern side of town.
