Santo Antônio do Leverger lies on the Cuiabá River, south of the Mato Grosso state capital, Cuiabá. On a map, the river is the defining line. The town lies along its bank, with streets running roughly parallel to the water and others climbing straight away from it, forming a simple grid that reads clearly from above.
The town takes its name in part from Augusto Leverger, a French-born naval officer who served as president of the province of Mato Grosso in the nineteenth century. The municipality stretches toward the Pantanal, one of the world's largest tropical wetlands, and the river has long linked the town to that low, seasonally flooded country.
