São Felipe lies in the Recôncavo Baiano, the fertile arc of land around the Bay of All Saints in Bahia, though it sits inland, well away from the water. From above the town appears as a compact centre of streets and squares, with roads leaving it in several directions toward farms and neighbouring towns.
The Recôncavo was one of colonial Brazil's most important agricultural regions, and its small towns still carry that inheritance in their layout: a central square, a few main streets, and an irregular fabric that adapted to the ground rather than following a grid.
