São Francisco do Conde lies in the Recôncavo of Bahia, on the northern shore of the Bay of All Saints. On the map, the town sits on the water's edge, with streets following the shoreline. The coast breaks up into mangrove inlets, small islands and channels, so land and water mix in an intricate pattern.
The town developed during the colonial sugar economy, when the Recôncavo was one of the richest parts of Brazil, and the Franciscan convent remains one of its historic buildings. Today it is home to the Landulpho Alves refinery at Mataripe, which gives this small municipality an unusually large economy.
