São Roque lies in the hills west of the city of São Paulo, in a landscape of ridges, valleys and remnants of Atlantic Forest. From above, the town's centre fills a valley floor with a compact grid of streets and squares. From there, neighbourhoods and country roads branch out into the hills, following streams and ridgelines.
The town is known across the state as a wine country, the land of wine. It has a long tradition of vineyards and wineries along a signposted wine route, and on weekends it is a popular trip for São Paulo residents. Main highways towards the capital pass near the town, and the map shows their broad curves through the hills.
A São Roque map poster captures this pleasant mixture of town and countryside. The small central grid is dense and orderly, the roads curve outward through valleys, and the space between them is filled with forest, farms and water.
