Sarstedt lies in the Leine valley between Hanover and Hildesheim in Lower Saxony. From above, water defines the town. The Innerste winds in from the south and joins the Leine at the edge of the municipality. Both rivers leave broad green meadows that housing has never quite filled. The historic centre is a small, tight cluster of streets beside the Innerste.
Transport lines give the map its other strong strokes. The railway between Hanover and Hildesheim runs straight through town, and main roads fan out toward both cities. At the edges, flooded former gravel pits appear as lakes with smooth outlines, adding clean shapes to the floodplain and a sense of calm to the outskirts.
