Loire islands
The river divides around islands in front of the town, creating layered bands of water and land. The Île d'Offard, between two arms of the Loire, is built up and linked by bridges.

El mapa
Saumur Map Poster & Print
Saumur lies on the Loire in the Maine-et-Loire department, where the Thouet flows into the larger river. From above, the town is organised by water. The wide Loire splits around islands, long stone bridges cross from bank to bank, and the old centre is packed onto the south bank below a limestone slope topped by the Château de Saumur.
The town is known for the Cadre Noir, the elite riders of the French national riding school, and for its long cavalry tradition. The soft tuffeau stone of the valley was quarried for centuries, leaving caves that now hold wine cellars, including those of the region's sparkling wines. On the map, the dense medieval lanes contrast with the straighter avenues of later districts.
A Saumur map poster puts the river at the centre of the composition. The Loire's broad channel and islands leave large open shapes, and the bridges stitch them together with thin lines. The street network thickens around the castle before thinning out into vineyards and farmland, a calm and well-proportioned view of the Loire Valley.

Château on the slope
The castle stands on high ground above the old town. On the map, streets curve around the slope and converge below it, which marks the historic core clearly.
Bridges across the Loire
Long bridges carry roads from the north bank across the islands to the centre. They form fine straight lines over the open water that tie the composition together.
