Schwalbach is a municipality in the Saarlouis district of western Saarland, made up of several villages that have grown toward one another over time. The map shows this history clearly. There is no single centre. Instead there are several small cores, each with its own older main street, linked by roads that follow the valleys and wooded ridges of the Saarland hills.
Like much of the Saarland, the area's working life was long tied to coal and steel in the nearby Saar valley. Twentieth-century housing now covers many of the slopes between the older village streets. Forest still covers much of the higher ground, and on a print these woods become broad, calm areas that separate the neighbourhoods and give the composition a clear rhythm.
