Sefrou lies about thirty kilometres south of Fes, where the plain meets the first slopes of the Middle Atlas. Its old medina is compact and walled, and the Oued Aggai runs straight through it, so on a map the old town appears as a dense knot of lanes divided by a winding line of water, with newer quarters spreading around it.
The town has long been known for its orchards and especially for cherries, and its annual Cherry Festival has been recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Sefrou was also home to a large Jewish community for centuries, and its mellah remains part of the old town. Around it, hills and gardens give the edges of the map a greener feel.
