Selby lies on the flat land of North Yorkshire, beside a broad bend of the River Ouse. The town centre is compact, with the market place and the great abbey church at its heart. Streets spread outwards towards newer housing, and a canal leaves the river heading southwest. From above, the river and canal give the map its main lines.
Selby Abbey was founded in 1069 and is one of the few large monastic churches in England to survive as a parish church. One of its windows carries the heraldry of the Washington family, with stars and stripes that are sometimes cited as a forerunner of the American flag. A swing bridge still carries the road over the Ouse.
A Selby map poster makes the river crossing its focal point. The Ouse sweeps past the old town, rail and road bridges span it, and the bypass traces a wide arc around the edges. It is a clear, balanced composition of an old market town and the waterways that brought it trade.

The canal leaves the river and runs in a straight line southwest towards the River Aire, a clean, engineered stroke next to the natural curves of the Ouse.
