Sembawang lies on the northern coast of Singapore, facing Malaysia across the Johor Strait. On a map the coastline is its strongest feature: a gently curving shore with shipyard basins and a waterfront park. Inland, the new-town housing estates form loops of roads and clustered blocks around Sembawang MRT station on the North–South Line.
For much of the twentieth century the area was dominated by the British naval base built between the wars. Tree-lined roads and black-and-white colonial houses from that period still survive nearby, and part of the base later became a commercial shipyard. Sembawang Hot Spring Park holds the only natural hot spring on Singapore's main island.
