Semi is in the Ouémé department of southern Benin, near the coast between Cotonou and Porto-Novo. The land here is a narrow barrier, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and lagoons and wetlands on the other. From above, the town is shaped by that strip: long parallel lines of coast, road and water run east to west.
The main coastal road carries traffic between Cotonou and the Nigerian border. Neighbourhoods have grown on both sides, with a dense, irregular pattern of plots and lanes. The shoreline to the south is almost perfectly straight sand. To the north, the land breaks up into channels, marsh and the open water of the lagoon near Porto-Novo.

North of the settlement, lagoons, channels and marsh break the land into irregular shapes. They create a softer, more complicated edge than the coast.

The main road runs east to west along the barrier strip. Neighbourhoods line it, and it links the area to Cotonou and toward Nigeria.
