Sens is in Burgundy, on the Yonne river. It is one of the oldest cities in France, and its Cathedral of Saint-Étienne is considered one of the first great Gothic cathedrals, begun in the twelfth century. For centuries the archbishops of Sens held a senior place in the French church.
The town plan is striking from above. The historic centre forms a clear oval, the shape of the old walls that once surrounded it. Tree-lined boulevards replaced the walls and now circle the old town. The Yonne runs along the western side, with bridges leading to the suburbs across the river.
