Sérres lies in Central Macedonia in northern Greece, where the wide, fertile plain of the Strymon River meets the slopes of Mount Menoikio. The modern city spreads across the flat ground in a fairly regular grid, much of it rebuilt after the fire of 1913 during the Balkan Wars. Above it, the older heights rise sharply toward the hills.
The most recognisable point is the Koulas, the acropolis hill with the remains of Byzantine walls and a medieval tower, which offers wide views across the plain. Below it, the centre is organised around a few large squares. The city is also known for its Byzantine church of Saints Theodore and, among Greeks, for its bougatsa.
