Setouchi lies on the Seto Inland Sea in the south-east of Okayama Prefecture. Its coast is irregular, full of small bays, headlands and nearby islands, and the map traces that shape in detail. Settlements sit along the shore and in valleys running inland, separated by wooded hills and patches of farmland.
The city was formed in 2004 by merging several towns. Ushimado, its best-known seaside district, has been called the Japanese Aegean for its sheltered harbour and olive groves on the hillsides. Inland, Osafune is known as a historic centre of Bizen swordmaking, with a museum devoted to that craft.
