Sèvres lies just beyond the south-west edge of Paris, across the Seine from Boulogne-Billancourt, where the river swings round in a wide loop. The town climbs from the waterside up a narrow valley between wooded heights, with the Parc de Saint-Cloud to the north and the forest of Meudon to the south. The Pont de Sèvres links it directly to the capital.
The name is known worldwide through porcelain. The national porcelain manufactory has worked here since the eighteenth century, beside the river near the bridge, and it still makes pieces alongside a museum of ceramics. Sèvres also gave its name to the 1920 treaty signed after the First World War. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures has its seat nearby, in the Pavillon de Breteuil.
