Sfântu Gheorghe, Sepsiszentgyörgy in Hungarian, is the seat of Covasna County and one of the main towns of the Székely Land, with a large Hungarian-speaking majority. It sits in a broad basin within the Eastern Carpathians, where the still young Olt river flows past the town before continuing its long course through Transylvania.
The map shows a town that grew on gentle ground beside the river. An older centre of streets and squares gives way to socialist-era housing districts and then to fields and hills.
