Shangchong lies in the hilly southeast of Guizhou province, in southwestern China. The terrain here is steep and heavily folded. On a map, the town takes the only shape the land allows: a long, narrow strip of streets running along a valley floor, with slopes rising sharply on both sides.
Roads leaving town follow rivers and streams or climb the hillsides in tight switchbacks. Beyond the built-up area, the map becomes mostly empty terrain, cut by small valleys and scattered with villages on the lower slopes. This is a region where people have long built wherever the mountains leave flat ground.
A Shangchong map poster shows a settlement shaped entirely by relief. The streets line up with the valley, the edges are defined by hillsides, and a few thin roads wind off into the mountains. It is an elegant, linear composition, very different from a lowland town plan.
