Shanghe lies in the western part of Chongqing municipality, where the land is rolling rather than steep, with low hills, shallow valleys and plenty of farmland. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets on the flatter ground, surrounded by the fine, curving lines of fields and terraces shaped over many years of cultivation.
The street network is simple: a few main roads through the centre, with shorter lanes branching off and dense blocks packed in between. Roads leading out of town wind between the hills towards neighbouring settlements. In black and white, the pattern is gently organic, less dramatic than the cliff-side districts further east but clearly shaped by the land.
